Journey Weißenburg in Kreisliga

As Lucas Dos Santos begins a new chapter in his soccer career with Weißenburg II in Germany’s Kreisliga, his journey from Berkeley, California to Bavaria underscores the importance of strategic decisions, adaptation, and continuous growth.

Early Beginnings and Development in Germany

Born in 2000 in Berkeley, California, Lucas’s soccer journey took a significant turn when he joined the IFX Soccer program for a 30-day trial in 2021. This initial experience introduced him to the competitive nature of German soccer, known for its efficiency, tactical discipline, and strong defensive emphasis.

Joining Weißenburg II: A Strategic Move

Recently, Lucas returned to Nürnberg to rejoin IFX Soccer for a half-season program, where he underwent evaluation in training. This process led to his selection and eventual signing with Weißenburg II, a team currently competing in the Kreisliga. This move was carefully planned, particularly given Lucas’s recovery from knee surgery. The decision to join Weißenburg II allows him to balance his rehabilitation with competitive play in an environment that supports his long-term development.

“My coaches and teammates have been incredibly supportive, especially with my need to manage my recovery. If I need to take a session or two off because of my knee, they understand and encourage me to focus on my long-term health”

The club, which benefits from shared facilities with the Landesliga first team, provides an excellent environment for Lucas to recover and continue developing his skills.

This transfer has not only provided Lucas with ample playing time but also a sense of belonging within the team. "It's nice to feel like an important piece of the team," he adds, emphasizing the positive impact this environment has had on his confidence and performance.

"The facilities are top-notch, and the fields are excellent, which is expected given that the first team plays in the Landesliga"

The Challenges and Rewards of Adapting to German Soccer

After nearly four years in Germany, Lucas reflects on the challenges and rewards of adapting from American soccer to the German system.

"The adaptation process has been difficult. Germans play with a lot less dribbling and are very efficient in how they use their touches. I had to learn how to defend very well because that’s something they do best here," he explains.

Adapting to the German style of play is a common challenge for foreign players, but it’s often met with a welcoming attitude from local players. German soccer culture is known for being inclusive, especially toward foreign players who show dedication and a willingness to integrate.

"My teammates are friendly and often invite me out or to do things in our free time. It’s been essential in helping me feel more at home here," Lucas shares.

"If you are looking to develop your game to a professional level, Germany, or playing in Europe in general, is one of the best ways to do that. I wouldn’t have improved as much as I did if I had stayed at home,"

The Role of IFX in Lucas’s Journey

Throughout his time in Germany, IFX Soccer has been a critical partner in Lucas's development, both on and off the field. "IFX helped me significantly. The staff members, in particular, were instrumental in helping me get used to the culture and navigate the football system and its politics here. They also helped me find a team and are now supporting me as I recover from knee surgery," Lucas says. This ongoing support has been invaluable, allowing Lucas to focus on his recovery and continued growth as a player.

Looking Forward: Goals for the Upcoming Season

As Lucas looks ahead to the upcoming season with Weißenburg II, his goals are clear: "I want to continue developing as a player, get as much playing time as possible while also taking care of my knee, and of course, score a lot of goals," he says with a smile.

He strongly encourages aspiring professional players to consider moving abroad to advance their careers.

With his sights set on recovery and performance, Lucas Dos Santos is ready to make a significant impact at Weißenburg II, leveraging his experience and skills in the Kreisliga.
