The Interesting case of Julian Green: Red, White and Blue

Bild, a German news outlet has reported and confirmed that Bayern Munich forward Julian Green has agreed to train with the US national soccer team ahead of its March 5th friendly against Ukraine. The match, still scheduled to take place despite ongoing protests and civil unrest, will provide a first glimpse into the young prospect who is turning heads in Munich. It is important to note that Green will ONLY be training with the unannounced squad (assumptions consider a primarily European based player pool, as the Major League Soccer season kicks off the same week as this international friendly).

Green, born in Tampa, Florida to an American father and German mother is eligible to compete with the USA after he files a FIFA mandated federation switch. His duel nationality means he can represent either the USA or Germany at a full international level. Green, presently attached to Germany (as he has participated in the U-19s European Championship qualifiers), would have to file a one-time federation switch before he could compete with the US. This leaves the heralded youngster with a difficult decision.

Jürgen Klinsmann, set to face his country in the Group stages of this years’ World Cup, has taken massive strides changing the dynamics and approach of team USA.  The squad won the Hexagonal stages of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers and is presently ranked 13th by the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings. Team USA looks to battle their way out of the Group of Death, alongside Ghana and Portugal. Imagine the storyline that would ensue if Julian Green finds his way to Brazil in Red, White and Blue.
