Soccer is a sport that is driven by teamwork, where every player plays an important role in the success of their team. Among these players, goalkeepers hold a special position as they are the last line of defense between the opposing team and their own goalpost. One goalkeeper who recently caught the attention of many locals in Lauf an der Pegnitzis is Stuart Roosa (19), a native of Florida currently playing for SK Lauf in the German Bezirksliga.

After getting the nod for the start against SpVgg Hüttenbach-Simmellsdorf team from the SK Lauf’s coach Norman Matschke, after goalkeeper Sven Kreiser sustained an injury in the first half, Roosa faced a tough match against the #1 team in the table, SpVgg Hüttenbach-Simmellsdorf. SK Lauf was down 4-0 when Roosa came off the bench to replace him. For the next 45 minutes Roosa had a stellar performance leaving the lucky fans in awe.

An impressive record

In the second half, Roosa had multiple important saves, won many 1v1 opportunities and confidently came off his line, fast and firmly to prevent them from scoring. He wisely played the ball in the areas that would create the most opportunity and that is how his team almost came back. They battled back almost tying the game with a respectable 4 - 3 result, which after being down 4-0 would have been a great upset in this league. This is Stuart second game in a row against a team in the top 4 without getting scored on, an impressive record considering that no other goalie on SK Lauf has one clean sheet.

Stuart’s journey in Germany began when he arrived to Nürnberg as part of Pro Year Germany, an IFX Soccer program which allows players to live in Germany, study the German language, and play for a club fit to their level. Roosa has been part of the program for the 2022-23 season coming to an end in May. He has not only improved his soccer abilities but has also learned about the German culture and language during his time in Germany. “My stay in Germany was amazing. Learning a new language and being welcomed into a new culture was fantastic. My team was very kind and would push me each practice. I will miss the friends I made here, but I will never forget the experience,” Roosa stated.

“Stu” is a goalkeeper who demonstrates that hard work, determination, and perseverance not only catch eyes but open doors. His performances on the field was nothing short of remarkable, and he proved that he has what it takes to play at a high level. He is a goalkeeper who has the potential to go far and achieve great things, and it will be exciting to see where his career takes him in the future back in The States.

“My stay in Germany was amazing. Learning a new language and being welcomed into a new culture was fantastic” Stuart Roosa.

Roosa's time in Germany has been a valuable experience that has helped him grow both as a soccer player and as a person. “My game has definitely improved a ton since coming. My distribution for one has gotten so much better. In Germany distribution from the goalkeeper position is crucial, so I was forced into becoming better with my feet,” Roosa stated.

We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours and hope to see him continue to thrive in the sport he loves.
