Football Stadium Spotlight- Allianz Arena (München, Deutschland)

Ground officially broke on the €340 million stadium project on the 21st of October 2002; and would replace the previously used Olympiastadion (built for the 1972 Summer Olympics). The Allianz Arena opened its doors on May 30th, 2005 with local club 1860 München facing off against Bavarian rivals 1 FC Nürnberg. Herzog & de Meuron ArupSport completed the architectural work and the stadium has a seating capacity of 75,024. Although the exterior may seem white, it is actually composed of plastic panels that can change colors.

Since opening in 2005, the stadium houses the two biggest Munich based football clubs, FC Bayern München and TSV 1860 München. Additionally, the grounds have played host to the FIFA World Cup (2006), UEFA Champions League Final (2012) and the German National Team. The stadium is also scheduled to be a venue for the upcoming UEFA European championships (2020) that is being held across thirteen cities in thirteen different EU countries; marking the 60th birthday of the competition.

The panels are lit for each game with the colors of the respective home team—Bayern München (Red), 1860 München (Blue) and German national team (White).

First Goal: The stadium’s first goal in a competitive game went to Roy Makaay of FC Bayern in the semi-finals of the 2005 DFL-Ligapokal* played on 26 July 2005. In the same game Thomas Hitzlsperger (VfB Stuttgart) scored the first goal in an official game by a visiting team. The game ended 2–1 in favor of VfB Stuttgart.

*[DFL-Ligapokal was a club competition that would be played prior to the start of the new Bundesliga Season. The competition was played between six teams in knockout format. The top four teams of the previous Bundesliga campaign, the winner of the German Cup, and the 2.Bundesliga champion would all qualify. The competition was abolished after 2007.]

Fun Fact: The stadium has been nicknamed: “Schlauchboot” which translates to “inflatable boat” given its appearance in its surroundings.

Location: 25 Werner-Heisenberg-Allee, 80939 München
The stadium is located next to the Fröttmaning U-Bahn station (U6 Line)
