1 FC Magdeburg is based out of the town of Magdeburg, Germany. The town, which is situated on the Elbe River, is the capital city of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Magdeburg is situated on the Elbe River. It was regarded as an important medieval city in Europe. Emperor Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, was later buried in the town’s cathedral after his death.

Return to Professional division

1.FC Magdeburg won the 2014-15 Regionalliga Nordost, which earned the club a place in the promotional playoff in which the winner earns promotion into the 3.Liga. The club would face the champions of the Regionalliga Südwest Kickers Offenbach. Magdeburg decisively won the home and away series 4-1 on aggregate; and would return to the 3 tier. The win returned the club to a fully professional league for the first time since reunification.

Since December 2006 with the completion of the MDCC-Arena in Magdeburg, the club has a new stadium with a full capacity of 27,250 spectators. The new stadium replaced the old Ernst-Grube grounds as the clubs home.

American in the squad

The surprise roster addition for the new 3.Liga campaign would be an unknown commodity to the football world named Ryan Malone. Malone, an American from Massachusetts, last played collegiate soccer for Springfield College. Springfield College competes as an NCAA division 3 school and is not primarily known for its soccer program. Malone has also competed with USL-PDL club Western Mass Pioneers.

 First start, first professional goal

Malone proved to be the difference as his match winning goal vs Wehen Wiesbaden (10.24.15) gave all 3 points to the home side. The following weekend Malone would find himself in the starting 11 once again. He would once again find the back of the net in a 3:2 loss to league leaders and arch rivals, Dynamo Dresden. Unfortunately his good run of form would come to an end the following week against Preußen Münster as he would suffer a knee injury and become sidelined. 1 FC Magdeburg is presently in 4th place in the 3.Liga; 3 points behind Erzgebirge Aue who occupy the last promotional playoff spot.
