A few weeks ago we received exciting news from Puerto Rico – better known as the Island of Enchantment – that our Pro Year Germany University participant and recently newcomer at German soccer club DJK Don Bosco Bamberg, Rodrigo Lloveras (21) was selected from among many other top footballers who play on the Island and abroad to represent Puerto Rico in the next CONCACAFMen’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

With the goal to qualify for Tokyo 2020, the U23 Puerto Rican Men’s National Team started earlier this year the selection and evaluation of candidates. The new coaching staff commanded by former professional soccer player and proponent of “Tico” soccer, Elgy Morales has gone through a long process of recruitment which began with going around the Island seeking out the best local soccer players as well as talented footballers who currently are playing abroad, such as Rodrigo Lloveras.

Puerto Rican Defender right-back, Rodrigo Lloveras (21) had to travel continuously to/from Germany in response to tryouts for the Puerto Rican U23 National Team. After continuous cuts,  a list of 25 came players remained for selection on the U23 National Team. Lloveras has been selected in the 25 but nonetheless one extra cut is needed. Puerto Rico will register 20 players in their Pre Olympic roster to travel to Dominican Republic where they will compete in Group D of the Qualifying stage.

During the selection process Rodrigo had to come back to Germany in order to sign for his new club DJK Don Bosco Bamberg for 2019-20 season. Shortly after signing with DJK, a traditional German club competing in the highly respected Oberliga level in Bavaria, known as the Bayernliga, Lloveras had to travel back to the island where he joined the Puerto Rican U23 roster at the Albergue Olimpico, training 2 times a day.

Just a few days ago, Rodrigo was selected and called-up for U23 Puero Rican National Team duty and traveled to Dominican Republic where they take Saint Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda and Dominican Republic on July 17, 19 and 21 at San Cristobal Panamerican Stadium.

We have been working on bring our team together and communicate us on and off the field in order to give our best towards the goal of taking our island to a higher level. Tactically, technically and physically we are ready; achieving unity we have what is needed to pass group stage”

Since Rodrigo moved from Spain to Germany in 2017, he has made tremendous strides in his pathway to make soccer his life career, moving up one division every year while he continues pursuing his higher education, moving into his final year of studies working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration as the IFX partner University in Nürnberg. In 2017 he played for SG Nürnberg Fürth 1883 in the Bezirksliga, he moved up to SV Memmelsdorf in the Landesliga in 2018 and now moved up yet another division in 2019 to compete with  DJK Don Bosco Bamberg in the semi-professional Bayernliga Nord.

This is a big accomplishment in the life of all footballer. To represent your homeland in an international soccer tournament is a big responsibility that we are sure Rodrigo and the U23 Puerto Rican National Team will live up to. From here, to wish them the very best of luck and very best of success in this and their future endeavors.
